Plans to restore and reopen Bennerley Viaduct have received a significant boost thanks to a pledge by Broxtowe Borough Council to allocate up to £20,000 towards the project as part of a match funding arrangement. Sustrans, an environmental charity is actively working with local councils, partners and communities to re-open the viaduct and connect it with the Erewash Valley Trail and other walking and cycling routes. We will be assembling at 10:00 am at the Bridge Inn in Cotmanhay and will be working until approx. 3:30 pm.
As we are now approaching nesting season, we can no longer focus on vegetation and scrub clearance so the main focus of the work will be cleaning up some of the remaining brick pier bases and removing any vegetation which is growing out of the structure. We can also clean up some of the old brickwork that has been dislodged by vegetation by removing the mortar from the loose bricks. We will not be able to clear the pier which is covered with Japanese Knotweed. Continue reading “Workday – 12th March 2016”
The next Bennerley Viaduct Workday is next Friday the 12th of February. This time Sustrans’ ecologists will provide specialist training on scrub management and how to enhance the habitats on the site. They will also give training on how to lead a practical work party. See the attached course agenda for the day. This is a great opportunity to get some specialist training as well as to carry out practical management tasks.
