Viaduct Workday – June 14th 2017

Scaffold being erected for repairs to abutment brickworks, digging out of pier 4 and visits from the Chief Executive of Heritage Lottery Fund, Ros Kerslake, Erewash Museum and Streetside who put up a banner made by the young people showcasing the viaduct.

Please Note: The workday which was due to take place on July 1st will be a workday leaders training event to which you are all welcome to attend.

Next Workday, Saturday July 1st.  Free Training Event and Planning Walk

Free Training Event: Managing and Helping to Manage Volunteer Workdays.9:00 am to 1:30 pm. Meet under the viaduct.

The training opportunity creates the opportunity for more people to access training to either manage or help to manage volunteer workdays. This will mean that we can run volunteer workdays at regular times throughout the year, The training will include, risk assessment planning, tool usage and maintenance, tips on managing volunteers etc.  It may be the case that at the moment you would not want to have the responsibility to run a workday so there would be no obligation or expectation for you to do so.  But if you consider that you may want to assist in the running of workdays at some stage in the future, this course may be helpful for you. The training will take place under the viaduct starting at the earlier time of  9:00 am lasting until 1:30 pm. The session will be led by Sustrans Volunteer coordinator, Dan Robertson.

If you are able to attend this training, please e mail Sim Duhra and Dan Robertson to confirm a place as soon as possible.  dan.robertson@sustrans.org.uk  sim.duhra@sustrans.org.uk

Planning Walk.  1:30 to 3:00 pm, a walk will take place under the viaduct with Sustrans staff to further discuss ideas for developing the underside of the viaduct. (Plans for Spans) These ideas can then be incorporated into a more detailed management plan which in turn, will help guide the focus of volunteer workdays. If you do not wish to do the training but would like to be included in the planning walk come to the viaduct for 1:30. Again, please let Dan or Sim know whether you can attend.

Meeting Point: under viaduct at the Cotmanhay end. The barrier will be open. Bring a packed lunch and suitable clothing for the day.

Here are the dates for our upcoming volunteer workdays.

The workdays start at 10:00 and finish about 3:00. There will usually be a range of tasks which vary from workday to workday.

  • Wednesday 14th June – A midweek workday will take place to coincide with the visit of the Chief Executive of Heritage Lottery,  Ros Kerslake. Ros is interested in meeting volunteers and seeing the work that the volunteers have done to date.   She will be at the viaduct at some time between 11:30am and  12:30 pm. I realise that many of you will working but the visit will enable us to demonstrate the fantastic amount of work that has been achieved over the last two years.  It would be really helpful if you could e mail me kieran.lee@sustrans.org.uk and let me know whether you can attend the Wednesday event as I need to plan the session and know how many will be attending. Tools provided but bring a spade if you have one.
  • Saturday 1st July (See above)
  • Saturday 5th August
  • Saturday 2nd September
  • Saturday 7th October
